Testimonial for Feral Science; Summer Term 2019
Lewis Charlton Group of Learning Centres

This was the first time we had commissioned Feral Science to offer ‘bushcraft’ sessions as part of our Enrichment Day activities during the Summer Term.

At first, learning bushcraft is about gaining fundamental knowledge and basic techniques, largely aimed at addressing our basic needs - shelter, fire, water and food. Each week developed previous learning and was always practical, pitched perfectly to the individual needs of our groups.

Our students aged between 5 and 15 years old spent time in a woodland environment, learning new bushcraft skills with Rupert Loch who captured both their interest and developed their scientific skills from the outset! The weather wasn’t always kind to our group, but the canopy of trees offered a natural shelter as students worked well collaboratively to learn about and try new skills such as water purification, fire-making and cordage.

Here is some feedback from some of our students……”I had a fantastic time and never knew a wood could be so exciting!”

“I enjoyed learning about the plants and especially making fire in the fire-pit. Thank you for your encouragement”.

“Really enjoyable, the time flew and I didn’t want to get back on the minibus….”

“I liked getting mucky!”

Mr Loch’s enthusiasm and diversity of knowledge delivered a professional, safe and fun opportunity to learn. His determination to complete a task modelled how easily transferable this is to many scenarios in life. Great memories were made. Interactive learning at its best.

We strongly recommend this experience for all children. Thank you!

John Taylor Free School
'Feral Science Ltd, assisted and provided support for our Big Bang event at John Taylor Free School. The impact on the students was huge, with students learning vital skills in Bushcraft. The value in teaching this hands on approach, enables students of all abilities to access learning within this field of science. We will definitely like to work with this company again'.

"We will be taking a selection of Bushcraft Skills such as Cordage making, Campfire gadgetry and at least one fire lighting method to highlight a variety of topics in the Science curriculum at levels 3 and 4. Dave Watson who has been teaching and training people in Bushcraft for well over 20 years and Rupert Loch, a Science teacher (as well as a climber, archery instructor….) are both convinced that in order to help people understand real science we need to bring it down to its simplest form."
