Home Education and Tutoring

Summary

Feral Science is experienced in teaching using the outdoors at Upper KS2, KS3, GCSE, as well as the parallel syllabi for the ISEB at 11+, 13+ and for scholarship entry.

Rupert is also available to tutor students face-to face in the Biology, Chemistry and Physics from KS2 to GCSE level. This can either be conventional tutoring or part of a blended session that uses some outdoor learning techniques.

Grouping

Where possible I try to teach students of similar age, especially if some of the students are preparing for GCSE or equivalent exams, as this means that I can direct the learning to their needs. In practice, GCSE and KS3 can often group together as can Upper KS2 with KS3. Younger students can be taught too but this is better within a separate group with a higher level of parental support. Siblings are welcome as we are also able to teach to different age groups within a session; using the same tasks but with age appropriate outcomes.

Support

While we are familiar with the learning requirements of the various stages, we acknowledge that Home Educated students have different requirements and may be at different stages to equivalent age students in mainstream schools. Feral Science is familiar with the needs of students who may struggle with traditional schooling, have SEN, ADD, ADHD and Autism spectrum requirements. Sessions may be planned accordingly with engagement as a primary consideration with the academics playing a secondary role. Gifted and Talented students can also be supported.

Staff qualifications

Parents and carers are always welcome to stay with the group, and may be involved by arrangement. For Child Protection reasons I require the presence of another adult, this can be arranged within the group if adults from some families need to be off site. Feral Science staff have full DBS (formerly CRB) checks, certification is available to view. Additionally Rupert holds Qualified Teaching Status, First Aid certification, Child Protection Training, IOL Bushcraft Competency and a selection of other coaching qualifications.

Location

I currently have groups running close to Ashby De La Zouch in NW Leicestershire but would consider travelling if a group has been established and has a suitable venue to use. The venue does not need to be a woodland, although this is great, I have previously used private gardens and edges of sports fields (with permission). If you are planning to form a group close to your home please get in touch.

Book Now

We acknowledge that costs can be difficult to meet for Home Educating families. Feral Science tries to form groups of around 8 students so that the costs can be shared between families while still achieving the appropriate amount of teaching time.

While one-off group sessions are available, regular sessions prove to be more beneficial. Feral Science Home Education groups generally meet for one half day a month, though this can be adapted to a group if required.

*FIRST THURSDAY COMING SOON: Every first Thursday of each month, Feral Science will aim outdoor sessions at Upper KS2 and KS3 students. Please contact for bookings.*

£25 per person (for a 3.5 hour Feral Science session, minimum group size of 6 unless otherwise arranged)
